Korea's first luxurious indoor ski resort will open on July 7, 2007. This Leisure theme park is referred as Tigerworld, which is located in Sang-dong Wonmi-gu, Bucheon-si Gyeonggi-do, is the third indoor ski resort built in Asia, followed by the first two in Japan and China, and the twelfth in the world.
This indoor ski resort is divided into a 270-meter-long straight main slope (40-meter-wide) and a 70-meter-long supplementary slope (30-meter-wide). Skiing, snowboarding and sledding can be thoroughly enjoyed.
This indoor ski resort of Tigerworld is equipped with the most advanced artificial snowplow, which can make superior snow almost the same as natural snow. It is also equipped with a high-grade air cleaner, which enables people to enjoy skiing while inhaling fresh air. Nonetheless, the rates are within a reasonable range starting from 30,000 Korean won up to 70,000 won, comparable in prices with other regular ski resorts.
Another appeal with this Leisure Theme Park is its close location to the southern part of Seoul, from which it can be accessed within only one hour if the Seoul Outer Circulating Road and the Seoul Metro line 7 are taken, making this resort more competitive in terms of distance when compared to other regular ski resorts in Gangwon-do.
Tigerworld is especially equipped not only with an indoor ski resort but also a water park, a golf course, etc., but is featured one of the biggest leisure theme parks in Korea.
The 'indoor water park' is equipped with the most advanced water-dabbling facilities, including a wave pool, a flowing water pool, a water slide, a regular pool, spa, and a rest lounge. A fitness center providing a personalized training program, a children¡¯s academy, leisure equipments/clothing shops, restaurants, etc. are also available.
In addition, Tigerworld is operating an indoor golf field, which was opened in April, 2006, having one of the longest driving distance in Korea that spans 360-yards together with 200 bats, Tigerworld is also proud of its excellent facilities such as a sauna, a cafeteria, and a screen golf, all providing first-class services equivalent to those in hotels.

Natural preservation areas on Korea's southernmost resort island were registered as U.N.-protected heritage sites on Wednesday (June 27), government officials said.
In its 31st annual session in Christchurch, New Zealand, the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) decided on the inscription of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes on the World Heritage List, according the Culture Ministry.
The designation was made on the main criteria of whether the sites have "outstanding universal values" and have been well-preserved, and whether the local government is capable of looking after them, ministry officials said.
UNESCO also accepted recommendations from the World Conservation Union (IUCN), the world's largest and most influential conservation network, in making its decision.
It is the first time for a Korean natural heritage site to be added to the World Heritage List. However, Korea already has World Cultural Heritage items designated by UNESCO.
As the official advisory body on natural World Heritage sites, IUCN recommended a lava tube system on Jeju Island for inclusion on the World Heritage List earlier this month.
"The Geomunoreum lava tube system is the most impressive and significant series of protected lava tube caves in the world and includes a spectacular array of stalactites and stalagmites," the union said.
Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes is comprised of a shield volcano which is about 1.2 million years old and rises to 1,950 meters above sea level at Mount Halla, South Korea's highest peak.
The site covers 18,846 hectares, over 10 percent of Jeju island.
Jeju Island is located 130 kilometers south of the Korean Peninsula. The largest island in Korea, it is covered with dark-brown volcanic rock and volcanic soil. Mount Halla was formed 25 thousand years ago, and the volcanic activities of Jeju Island started about 1.2 million years ago.

234. Parting Sea, Sunset Lure Visitors to Jebu Island

Surrounded by sea, Korea has many small and large islands. Among them, Jejudo (Jeju Island), located far off the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula, is the most famous and touristy.
But other small islands hold their own charm as well. And for those who don't like the hustle and bustle of touristy places, Jebudo is highly recommended.
Jebudo is a tiny island on the west coast whose entire -- 0.98 square kilometers -- area can be covered in less than 10 minutes by car.
But don't let the size mislead you. There are many things so special about the island.
One of the island's most fascinating features would have to be the sea between the mainland and the island, which opens up twice a day everyday like the famous parting of the Red Sea by Moses in the Bible. When the parting occurs, an expansive 500-meter wide mudflat reveals itself (Times vary). And tourists and fisherman inundate the tidal flat for pleasure and profit, respectively. Today a paved road connects the island and the mainland.

Visitors can dig up clams and start mud fights or just walk on the muddy plains. But be aware! Walking on the mudflat in bare feet is dangerous as sharp sea shells are embedded in the slit. You can purchase long plastic boots for 1,000 won or about one dollar.
If the mud is too much, you can simply walk along the beach. There are also many restaurants along the beach where clams can be enjoyed at semi-outdoor restaurants where plastic sheets are the only thing acting as a roof. You can also eat bajirak or short-necked clams with noodles.
The beach is very different from the ones found on the East Coast. Especially early in the morning or on cloudy days, the beach at high tide has a foggy aura that makes onlookers gasp.

Also, the sunset is definitely not to be missed. When the sun sinks below the horizon and dust deepens, you would be hard pressed to find a more beautiful sunset scene on the peninsula.
Another attraction is maebawi, a cluster of three rock formations looking like a falcon. Hawks rest there.
Since Jebudo is getting more popular, new accommodations have begun to pop up. Places fill up on the weekends, so call ahead to reserve a room.
Now popular with local and international visitors, Jebudo offers something for everyone. Whether you enjoy strolling along the seashore, clam digging, fishing, or bathing in reputedly medicinal mud, a visit to the area is a perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life while reconnecting with nature.

The Hangang River divides Seoul into northern and southern parts-Gangnam and Gangbok. A number of water sports such as boat riding, water-skiing, and windsurfing can be enjoyed at one of Hangang River ¡¯s Public Parks in the Ttukseom, Jamsil, and Jamwon districts.
All water sports happen in the Jamwon district with the exception of boat riding and windsurfing. You can even try the rare water motorcycle in this area. Ttukseom, being the first to provide water-sport facilities, has great advantages in that numerous businesses are trying to cater to many people who can enjoy the facilities simultaneously. Motorboats, rowboats, and paddleboats can be found in 3 locations. Water-skiing and wakeboarding are also available.
A cruise operates in the Ttukseom, Jamsil, Yeoui-do, Yanghwa, Mangwon, and Nanji areas.
Wakeboard
Wakeboarding is a leisure sport that can¡¯t be forgotten; it¡¯s an essential to water sports. ¡°Wake¡± is the V-shaped trail that is made when a propeller of a boat cuts the water¡¯s surface. Wakeboarding is a way of riding the waves made from the wake. This is much like a type of water-skiing called trick skiing, but compared to trick-skiing, wakeboarding is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone. There is a one-time fee anywhere between 18,000 won and 25,000 won, and can be enjoyed anywhere in the Hangang River area excluding the Yeoui-do, Yanghwa, and Nanji districts.
Water Motorcycle
Water motorcycles is unique to the Jamwon district, where water-skiing is also available to try. This is a bit expensive as it is 30,000 won for 1 ride (10 mins.).
Yachts, Paddleboats, Motorboats
Yachting can also be enjoyed on the Hangang River. In the Jamwon and Nanji districts, guests can enjoy an hour of yachting for about 30,000 won. If you would like to feel the refreshing winds of the river without getting your clothes wet, taking a ride on a boat or the excursion ship are great alternatives. Rowboats and paddleboats are available in the Ttukseom, Ichon, Yeoui-do, and Mangwon districts. Motorboats are available everywhere.

229. Nami Island: Hallyu-Discovered Getaway

|
|
|
Thanks mainly to Hallyu, the explosive popularity of Korean pop culture, but in particular the legendary success of the hit television drama ¡°Winter Sonata,¡± Korea's Namisum (Nami Island) has made a prominent mark on the map of popular tourist destinations here.
Covered with more than 300 species of trees, the island had long been frequented by those who appreciate its serene and idyllic setting, but when the drama ¡°Winter Sonata¡± became a mega-hit in Japan, Japanese tourists flocked there to walk amid the same scenes as the drama's stars Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo.
Although the drama's fame has subsided, Namisum is still a popular spot -- crowded on weekdays as well as the weekend.
Although commercialization has impacted the island to some extent, it can still be a refreshing getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. Only a 10-minute ferry ride from Gapyeong in Gyeonggi-do (Province) opens up a new world, or rather an older world; one untouched by the Digital Age.
The island is not as big as one might expect, but cozy and versatile.
Passing behind the well-known sculpture of a woman waiting in the lake at the main gate, people are ushered onto the grassy island that boasts a tranquil environment rich in biodiversity.
For those who want to enjoy nature in an idyllic setting, the highlight of the island is the many tree-lined paths that all lead to the central square's restaurants and shops. The birch tree lined path is better known among drama lovers as the path where Bae and Choi rode a bicycle on their date. You will also see the fragrant pine tree path and spectacular tunnel of tall meta-sequoia trees.
Great scenic spots are concentrated around the central square. Picnic benches are also scattered about the island, making it an ideal place for a family outing. But rememeber, you cannot bring in burners for cooking.
While on the island, Cheongpyeong Lake is visible through the trees and bushes. But while many visitors love the island for its slow paced nature walks, those who want more exciting experiences can visit entertainment facilities like the Movieland Wax Museum.
Namisum, which calls itself as "the island of magic and fairytales¡± also hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. Now on through June 30 is an international book festival, featuring children's books from about 70 countries.
Although it remains to be seen whether the new entertainment facilities add more popularity to the otherwise serene island, what is certain is that Namisum still is a key tourist spot for both Korean and foreign visitors. Admission, which includes the round-trip ferry ride is 5,000 won for adults and 2,500 won for children.
To get there from Seoul, take a train to Gapyeong Station. From there, take a cab to the ferry wharf at Gapyeong Parking Lot, or take a Truncheon-bound bus from Dong Seoul Terminal and get off at Gapyeong Bus Terminal.

228. Yeosu's 2012 Expo bid already paying tourism dividends

Statistical data show an increase in the number of tourists visiting Yeosu, Korea's port city currently bidding to win the hosting rights for the 2012 World Exposition.
According to tourism industry and official city statistics released Tuesday (May 22), the number of travelers who visited Yeosu increased to 1.44 million in April 2007 from 600,000 in 2006, a 139 percent increase year on year.
This is thanks to the 2007 Yeosu International Tall Ship Festival the city held in early May this year and nationwide efforts to help Yeosu pass the International Exposition Bureau's inspection a month earlier.
The number of tourists who visited Odong-do, one of the most popular attractions around Yeosu, rose 217 percent year on year. The number touring Jinnamgwan, a historic fortress used by Admiral Yi Sun-shin (1545-1598), also rose by 293 percent; Hyangil-am by 96 percent; and Dolsandaegyeo (Bridge) by 102 percent.
Considering the increase of tourists to Yeosu, Korean Air Lines is offering a 40-percent discount to passengers who visit two islands around Yeosu -- Geomun-do and Baek-do.
The greater popularity has also been reflected in Yeosu's service industry: restaurants and accommodations are often fully booked for weekend travel groups from around the country, forcing day-trippers to hunt for left over rooms.
Ahead of the summer peak season, Yeosu, is busy getting ready for more tourists, creating more tour packages to please tourists and preparing for the Yeosu International Youth Festival scheduled to begin August 13.
