Work Condition

The following is the average working condition as an English teacher in South Korea. It is especially good for all graduates who desire a competitive starting salary package and also to build positive professional work experience.

    Duration

The contract is signed as a yearly basis and is usually renewable at the end of the contract.

    Teaching Hours

About 30 hours per week (about 100-120 hours a month).

    Salary

The salaries vary from school to school but it is usually around 1.8 - 2.1 million Won depending on your qualification and teaching experiences. And it is easy to save money because the rent (the major expense for most people) is paid by the employer, the cost of living is very reasonable in Korea and the tax is rate is low (usually about 3-5%) If you work overtime, your pay will be higher. Overtime is usually paid at the rate of 15,000 - 18,000 Won per class.
So you can expect to save a substantial amount of money here. Most teachers report that they are able to save over two-thirds of their salary, using only one-quarter to one-third of their salary to live. Of course it all depends on your spending habits and lifestyle. You are also able to send money back home from Korea.

You may have to share kitchen and bathroom facilities. Some employers provide single houses, but it is not the usual case. With respect to rent, your employer will pay the rent. However, you are responsible for the monthly utilities such as electricity, telephone bills and etc. If you are sharing the place with other teachers, the cost of the utilities should be divided appropriately. The apartment will be located near the institute. Most jobs will be within walking distance from your house. If the apartment is not within walking distance, it will only be a short bus or subway ride away.

    Air Ticket

Your employer will provide or reimburse you an economy class ticket from the international airport in your country to Korea. After completing your contract, your employer will provide you with an air-ticket back to your country.
If you are coming with a return ticket, the first 50% of the ticket amount will be reimbursed on your arrival and the other 50% will be reimbursed on your completion of the contract.

    Medical Insurance

Your employer will enroll you in the Korean National Medical Insurance Union. The employer will usually pay 50% of the fee, with the other 50% paid by the employee. The amount is 1.5% of your salary. That's about US$30.

    Holidays and Vacations

About 10 days of paid vacation plus all the Korean national holidays will be offered to you.
